Product Description:
Marjory Barlow (1915 - 2006) was the niece of the late FM Alexander, originator of the world-renowned Alexander Technique. She started having lessons with her uncle when she was 16 and joined the first Alexander Technique teacher training course a year later. With her husband, NHS rheumatologist and Alexander Technique teacher Dr Wilfred Barlow, she opened an Alexander Technique teacher training course at the London-based Alexander Institute in 1950. After retiring from teacher training in 1979, Marjory continued giving lessons in small classes for teachers and students at her flat in Primrose Hill. It was there that social anthropologist and Alexander Technique teacher, Sean Carey PhD, interviewed her for this much-praised text, which provides unique insights into FM Alexander and the procedures which he developed for his students, including 'monkey', squatting, hands over the back of a chair, going up on to the toes, the lunge, the whispered ah, and lying down in semi-supine.
Review:
To have an accurate record of how FM Alexander taught his pupils, presented here by his niece, is not only an invaluable resource for us now, but also a most enjoyable read.
Diana Devitt-Dawson, Director and Head of Training, Alexander Technique Institute and Teacher Training School, Sydney
The informative discussion of the ground rules, paired with Barlow's insights into Alexander's character and teaching methods, make this book a valuable addition to the literature on the Alexander Technique.
Susan Lehotsky, AmSAT teacher of the Alexander Technique, Carlisle, Massachusetts
A modern classic for all Alexander students
